Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences

Welcome Address

Medical Laboratory Science is a dynamic and rapidly evolving profession that is designed to provide a broad basis for fundamental scientific knowledge and its application such that the graduands are well equipped to meet the changing needs of modern scientific knowledge and challenges in health care.

The program is equally designed to provide sound academic and professional background for the production of Medical laboratory scientists who would be capable of working anywhere in the world. The students of this noble discipline are exposed to application of Medical Laboratory Science in key areas such as Medicine, Pharmaceutical industries, Food and Beverages and Research Institutions to mention but a few.

Prof. Ozor Ignatius Ikemefuna

Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences

HISTORY
The Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences (FBMS),Enugu State University College of Medicine (ESUCOM) was created in 2014 during the tenure of the then Vice Chancellor, Prof. Cyprian Onyeji. The creation of the faculty which was facilitated by the immense support of the former provost Prof. A.O.C Akpa after due consideration to the report of panel headed by Prof. Chike Anibeze, was born out of the desire to have a separate faculty which will effectively house other departments outside clinical medicine. These include the pre-clinical Departments of the college (Human Anatomy,Medical Biochemistry and human physiology) together with the new Departments/Programmes approved and running in the College (B.Sc., M.Sc., PhD Anatomy and pHYSIOLOGY, B.Sc.in Medical Laboratory Sciences and the soon-to-come B.Sc. Nursing Sciences and Environmental health). The former provost of the college, Prof. A.O.C Akpa had at the swearing in ceremony of the 3rd batch of Medical graduands on 19th October, 2013, announced the readiness of the College to split into two faculties (Faculty of Clinical Medicine and Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences).

Hitherto, the College of Medicine had operated with one Faculty catering for both clinical and non-clinical departments. Thereafter, following the recommendation of the panel, a proposal was then submitted to the senate through the Vice chancellor. It was finally approved at the Senate meeting giving vent to its take-off. Prof. Chike Anibeze was appointed the foundation Dean for the faculty take-off. The immediate challenges became the problem of accommodation and basic infrastructure to house the new faculty. The department of Anatomy came to the rescue and offered the new faculty a temporary sanctuary at the Anatomy building.A proposal for building of a new faculty complex was generated and with the support of the provost, the Vice Chancellor approved the projects for TETFund sponsorship. The new Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences complex has now been completed and occupied. This four storey complex with a basement houses the Dean's office/secretariat, office apartments, lecture halls and some laboratories that added to the existing infrastructure of the faculty.

The inaugral meeting of 2014 marked the formal kick off of the Faculty. The pioneer dean was prof. Chike Anibeze, Faculty officer was Dr. Linus C. Nnamani, while the current Dean is Prof. A.O.C Akpa and Faculty officer is Mr. I. Offiah. The establishment of the department of Medical Laboratory Science can be traced to the accreditation of the department of Medicine, Enugu State University of Science and Technology and subsequent successful graduation of the first and second sets of medical students. With the graduation of these students, it now became very important to commence other programmes such as Bachelor of Science in Human Anatomy (B.Sc. Anatomy), Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS), Bachelor of Nursing Science s (BNS), Bachelor of Medical Rehabilitation (BMR), Bachelor of Medical Radiography (B. Rad), etc. that will make way for the actualization of the status of College of Medicine and Health Sciences. BS.c Anatomy was the second program to be introduced after Medicine and Surgery followed by Bachelor of Nursing Sciences.

Introduction of Bachelor of Medical laboratory Science in college of Medicine was approved by the senate of Enugu State University of Science and Technology in 2014. The program officially started in 2015 with the first set of Medical Laboratory science students admitted. Its takeoff was smooth sequel to the existence of departments allied to Medicine such as clinical Chemistry/Chemical pathology, Haematology/BGS, Medical Microbiology &Histopathology. In existence also was a Medical Laboratory Diagnostic section in the Teaching Hospital for students hospital laboratory posting experience. The department has successfully graduated two sets of students.
